Facebook Mainstreams Camming, Expands ‘Portal’ Device Lineup

LOS ANGELES — Facebook is seeking to mainstream immersive live video chat among consumers and is rolling out offerings that may help the company succeed — offerings that will not go unnoticed by the adult entertainment industry and the legions of independent cam models that fuel its growth.

Furthering its efforts, Facebook is adding three new models to its Portal family of video chat devices, including Portal with a 10-inch high-definition display viewable in landscape and portrait modes and Portal Mini, with an 8-inch high-definition display. Both devices feature an adaptive display that automatically adjusts brightness and color to the user’s surroundings and includes a powerful built-in speaker suitable for music playback when users are not on a call.

New Labor Law Reclassifies California’s Strippers As Employees

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Yesterday, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law Assembly Bill 5 (AB 5), a sweeping piece of legislation that rewrites the state’s employment law to address the status of independent contractors, including dancers at strip clubs.

The bill passed the legislature last week and was sold to voters as a possible answer to 21st-Century issues like the “gig economy,” corporate use (and abuse) of “perma-lancers” and ways in which employers get around labor protections by deceitfully characterizing some workers’ status.
